RABBI’S MESSAGE When you ask Reconstructionists why they chose this branch of Judaism, most of them will tell a story about searching for a form, a philosophy of Judaism that felt right for them. After trying and rejecting this or that movement, this or that synagogue, they, one day, found themselves in a Reconstructionist congregation. Perhaps they had come to a Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebration or a holiday service. Once the service began, they discovered they were surprisingly comfortable. One of our members stated, “From the first moment I entered Kehillath Shalom, I realized I had come home.”
Reconstructionist congregations create synagogues which enjoy an informal yet engaging ambience. This unique atmosphere is directly due to our religious philosophy. Rabbi Les Bronstein has expressed it this way: “We have managed to blend the haymishness of the steible, the communality of the Orthodox, the spiritual zest of the Hasidim, the seriousness of the Conservatives, the openness of the Reform, the concern of the Zionists, and the celebration of ethnicity of the Secularists into a new vision of Jewish life.” That sums up the tam or flavor of Reconstructionist communities. Our congregations are not institutions, they are spiritual homes.
